Germany Calling

The reason I haven't posted for so long is that I have been trying very hard to manage a family and a job. The combination leaves very little time for oneself - especially something as fun as writing in my weblog. I was also holding off to try and do a recap of the anual dinner party (complete with pictures - coutesy of JD's scanner) and have been short of time as well as pictures (come on JD)!

Last night as Jennifer and I were trying to get the kids to go to sleep we got a phone call from Clemens Jaros. When I went to Germany in the summer of 1992 with the Goshen College spring term SST unit I lived with Clemens' family in Jena, Germany. Five or six years later Clemens came and stayed with my mom and dad for an entire school year. Even though he had been out partying all night and was calling at 6:00 am Germany time, he was very excited to talk and we made arrangements for him to call back today in the afternoon (a better time for both of us).

When Clemens called today we talked for about 45 minutes and got caught up since the last time we had talked (two or three years ago). While talking to him I remembered that only a month or so before I received an email from Georg Gemmel (another friend from my time in Germany). Out of the blue one day in February or March I received this email in my inbox from G Gemmel. I was poised to throw it out when I realized it might not belong with the 35 other messages headed for the digital grave. I opened the message up and it read something like: "Are you the Jeremy from Goshen?" I was thrilled. How small the world becomes when you can communicate so easily with people far, far away.

These contacts dredged up memories from my time in Germany as well as the early carefree days of my marriage when Clemens would come to visit so he could sneak cigarettes and beer. I miss having contact with these people from my past and I hope to be able to keep in contact with them better using the internet as a medium.

Maybe I will get JD to scan some pictures from my time in Germany and post them here.
